The Gawker Media Hack is a case study on what NOT To Do!
From taunting hackers that obviously know more about computers than the entire Gawker team, Using 30 years old obsolete encryption, Calling their users and clients "peasants" while being aware that something is obviously wrong, and finally being so damn moronic that even when the account of the CEO is hacked publicly, still wondering what is going on.

Gawker did obviously did not care at all about your security:

Please note that this log was dated July 22, 2010 or roughly 5 months before the public release of the hack. 5 months! They were hacked for 5 months and had "no clues" whatsoever, besides having user names, emails and passwords published in clear.
I think they are in due course to win a Darwin Award.

I don't need to re-write how bad it was, this article from Daniel Kennedy explains it very well: The Real Lessons Of Gawker’s Security Mess
As for me, it took me very little time to crack 15,000 passwords, about 12 minutes to crack 82,600 passwords, and a bit more to crack 200,000 (sorry, I have a slow machine...)
I publish those results for the sake of statistical analysis, and in the hope that you will understand once for all that you need strong and long passwords.
